So I'm going to go more news-y than usual on you, giving some updates on what's going on at the fall festivals. It won't be long because, frankly, I don't have time to dig into things the way I'd like to, so I'm sticking with 100 words or less. The first installment will cover the first two days at Venice. Keep checking back for more over the next few weeks.
Everything you need to know about the Venice Film Festival, days 1 and 2 in 100 words or less...
...Starting now!
Ides of March world premiere on Wednesday. Reviews: Mixed, leaning positive. Praise for the acting, but message and execution nothing new. Oscar prospects in doubt.
Carnage debuted Thursday to similar response. Christoph Waltz best in show. Reaction to Kate Winslet mixed. Polanski's direction solid, but unspectacular.
Then, there's W.E., Madonna's take on the Wallis Simpson/King Edward romance, and most are calling it a noble disaster. Madonna seems out of her depth, yet the production values are solid and there are some interesting elements. But Oscars? No way.
86 words! Fuck yeah!
I should say, this isn't meant to really inform, but rather serve as a really quick recap for those already somewhat aware of what's going on at the fall festivals. Those looking for hard news or in-depth coverage should check out InContention's Guy Lodge on Twitter (@GuyLodge), as well as check out the daily critical consensus pages on IndieWire. Julian Stark of Movies and Other Things (@202chicago on Twitter) provided a great write-up on The Ides of March yesterday, and I presume he'll continue all season long. That's Venice; I'll have others to recommend during Telluride and Toronto.
Back this weekend with more!
