Welcome to my inaugural News Desk post. I'll be running down my top 3 stories of the past week, as well as previewing DVD and new theatrical releases for the coming week.
1.) Ryan Reynolds Goes Green
A trailer for this summer's Green Lantern movie hit a few months ago, and frankly, it did nothing for me at all. This weekend, we got an extended look at the potential blockbuster, starring Ryan Reynolds as ordinary-man-turned-galactic-superhero Hal Jordan. Has my opinion changed? Actually, yes. I'm still quite skeptical on the project for a number of reasons. Though Martin Campbell has proven himself a skilled director, I don't think he's ever worked with special effects of this kind before. I also think the idea behind Green Lantern is really silly. All that said, the trailer is given off some heavy Iron Man vibes, and if this film emulates the great Favreau/Downey, Jr. pairing, I'll have no complaints. See the new clip for yourself here.
2.) DC out for Justice in 2013?
Because you can never start talking about movies soon enough. I'm not a comic book die-hard or anything. I enjoy many superhero films, and I dislike just as many. The Avengers, a Marvel property, sounds like a very intriguing project, in my mind, though I recognize it has the potential to fall flat on its face. So, of course, DC Comics is in discussions for a Justice League movie--which would bring together the likes of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and a whole bunch of other unimportant superheroes. And it's being slated as a potential 2013 release! That's right, why wait to see what, if anything, about The Avengers works? Just jump in, ready to make the same mistakes as the Marvel property. I say they just go ahead and make a Justice League vs. The Avengers movie, so we can end all this superhero orgy nonsense at the same time.
3.) Surprise! Kids like the Easter Bunny
It's not hard to feel some dismay over this weekend's box office returns. Hop, basically a half-animated Easter version of The Santa Clause, made nearly $38 million, which is one of the highest opening April weekends in film history. I don't even feel like making a joke. It's that sad. Even worse, the good returns means Hop 2 shouldn't be ruled out. Throughout the rest of the top 10, however, audiences generally opted for quality. Source Code and Insidious (both fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) came in at numbers 2 and 3 respectively. Limitless, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Rango all held up well, while Zack Snyder's horribly reviewed Sucker Punch plummeted in its second weekend with a nearly 70% drop! More good news: The shameful PG-13 cut of Best Picture winner The King's Speech tanked upon its re-release with only $1.1 million.
