sundays, good company and afternoon treats at Werribee Mansion's SocieTea
Info Post
Well, it’s getting to the end of Wednesday, so it’s time to start thinking about the weekend! And about good weekends that have gone by, too. A few Sundays ago, I had the pleasure of attending The Mansion SocieTea at Werribee Park Mansion with some fantastic bloggers. It wasn’t an early start by any means, but of course that Saturday night I went to a party and sing-starred till 3am and so on Sunday I woke up feeling a little, you know, sleepy. I am not awesome in the mornings at the best of times and I dragged myself out of bed wondering why on earth had I made plans instead of leaving the day free for some sleeping followed by some slightly more strenuous lounging. After my first cup of coffee I started to feel better about things, though. And it was a beautiful, sunny Spring day. By the time I had got ready and was in the car I was much happier about the whole thing. I wore my vintage, early 1940's yellow dress with the beading detail (from here, when I promised I'd show more of it) and stood next to one of my favourite Australian signs, the "dance away from giant broccoli if it chases you" one, my Gorman rust suede platforms and the cardigan that is down to about 2-cents-per-wear for me, from Forever New. I also wore a flower crown I made a couple of years ago that Babycat had hidden and then found for me. The car ride was quicker than I expected and when we arrived, I was thrilled to be there! I’d never been to Werribee Park before, and had heard it was beautiful – and it really is. It reminds me of those grand stately homes back in the UK, set in huge lush gardens with lots of twists and turns to keep the walk to the front door interesting. The Mansion is the perfect setting for an afternoon tea. The plan was to have separate tables for two, but we’re a sociable bunch and so the tables were rearranged into one long one so we could all have tea together. This was so nice, as I got to catch up with some old blogger friends and meet new ones, too. The room we were in used to be the library, and you can really tell – dark painted walls, a high ceiling and lots of windows letting in the early afternoon sun made it feel cosy and airy at the same time. I love the lead lighting (stained glass windows back in the mother country) and the view of the flowers just outside. I loved the table settings, too. The roses-in-wine glasses are a nice idea – I think I should do this at home. And then... let the tea begin! Actually, that isn’t absolutely accurate; we started with the most delicious passion fruit cocktail. This was followed with champagne, platter after platter of tiny foods and, of course, lots of teas. I really enjoyed the food, as in the savoury things, as well as the cakes. The meat pies were a treat – the meat was actually recognisable, and meltingly delicious, rather than that usual dubious meat pie mush. And of course there were little sandwiches, scones, and cupcakes, all picture perfect and all yummy. I even went back for more savoury bits after getting started on the sweets which I’m sure breaks some rules but it was well worth it. It was nice to have such a delicate, picturesque and fancy afternoon tea that was filling, too! Candice, Chloe, Kyra and me – don't you love how we all match?! John, Joyce and Cara x Looking back, I am sooo glad I shook off my lazy Sundayitis and went along. It was such a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon – and do check out more here. And it is a good reminder for me, too, that even when I have that sleepy weekend feeling, there are some things that are very worth doing, and I’ll love them – and treasure their memory, too!
